The Vision
Every trip I plan starts with a story. Here’s one of them.
These two best friends came to me a few months before their final break in occupational therapy grad school, ready to plan a trip to celebrate the end of this chapter.
One had a friend living in Portugal, so we built the itinerary around visiting her while also creating a Spain and Portugal itinerary that allowed them to explore a few other destinations along the way.
They were looking for cute boutique hotels and a trip that didn’t feel overly planned, just a few key experiences, with plenty of time to explore and enjoy it together.
My Approach
We worked together to shape a trip that felt exciting, but not overly structured.
Since they already had a built-in stop in Porto, Portugal, to visit their friend, the biggest focus was figuring out how to build the rest of the itinerary around that without making it feel rushed.
Instead of trying to fit in too many destinations, we kept the number of stops intentional and chose places that each offered a different feel while still flowing well together.
We also kept their schedule lighter, adding in just a few key experiences and leaving the rest of their time open so they could explore, find places naturally, and really enjoy the trip together.
Even with moving cities every couple of days, the structure of the itinerary made the pace feel smooth rather than overwhelming.
The Plan
Lisbon. Porto. Barcelona. Madrid. Seville.
2 nights in each city allowed them to get a taste of each city while still having time to explore many different areas.
The Details That Made It
Hotels
They were traveling in the off-season, which gave us a bit more flexibility when it came to hotel options.
In Porto, I recommended Torel Palace Porto, a boutique hotel set within a restored 19th-century palace. It has a really unique feel and ended up being their favorite stay of the trip!
In Seville, they stayed at H10 Casa de la Plata. The location is perfect for walking everywhere, and the rooftop terrace added such a fun element for a girls’ trip.
Experiences
Since they wanted the trip to feel more relaxed and less scheduled, we kept planned activities to a minimum and focused on just a few standout experiences in each destination.
- A food tour in Lisbon to sample the local cuisine
- A paella cooking class in Madrid
- A flamenco show in Seville
Altogether, these details helped create a trip that felt balanced, easy, and genuinely fun from start to finish.
The Experience
This trip ended up being exactly what they were hoping for. Fun, easy, and a meaningful way to celebrate finishing such a big chapter.
Even though they were moving between cities every couple of days, the Spain and Portugal itinerary was designed in a way that made the pace feel manageable and well thought out.
They were able to experience a mix of destinations, spend time with their friend in Portugal, and still have the flexibility to explore and enjoy each place along the way.
It ended up being such a fun way to celebrate finishing OT school and the kind of trip you look back on and talk about forever!
“Amanda is exceptional at what she does and was checking in throughout the trip to make sure everything was running smoothly. The welcome Champagne and adorable notes at each hotel did NOT go unnoticed by the way!! Amanda enhanced this experience in every way. I will definitely be booking all future trips through Amanda!” – Traveler from Long Island, New York

This Spain and Portugal itinerary sounds like the perfect blend of structure and freedom—just what two best friends need for a well-earned celebration trip. I love how you centered the plan around their personal connection to Porto while still leaving room for spontaneous exploration. It’s a great reminder that the best trips often come from combining meaningful stops with the flexibility to enjoy the journey together.
The idea of building an itinerary around a pre-existing connection, like visiting a friend in Porto, is such a smart way to take the pressure off planning while still discovering new places. I love how the focus was on finding boutique hotels and leaving room for spontaneity rather than cramming in too many destinations. It really highlights how the best travel stories often come from balancing structure with the freedom to just enjoy the moment with friends.
The approach of centering the itinerary around visiting a friend in Porto while keeping the rest flexible is exactly what makes a trip feel well-earned rather than rushed. Highlighting that balance between key experiences and open exploration time seems like the secret sauce for a stress-free celebration with your best friend. I love how this story proves that the best itineraries often start with a simple, personal connection.
