From the delicious food to the unique adventures, Iceland keeps me wanting more. I had the pleasure of visiting in March, as well as planning many trips for clients as a travel advisor!

Iceland is a country that I believe is best toured by renting a car. This gives you the freedom to explore the cute towns all around the Iceland as well as the nature that is not reachable with a day trip from Reykjavik. Iceland is the type of place where, regardless of your travel experience, there are certain tours and activities that need to be booked with a guide in order to reach them.

This post will give you insight into six of my favorite Iceland tours worth booking for your trip to Iceland. Whether you have been there before or this is your first visit, these tours are highly recommended and worth booking! These tours are a mix of experinces you can do even if you do not rent a car and tours that require a car to get to the meeting point.

Iceland Tours worth booking

1. Katla Ice Cave Tour Iceland

Visiting Katla Ice Cave is a must-do activity if you are on the South Coast of Iceland. This Ice Cave Tour near Katla Volcano by Super Jeep departs from the town of Vik and takes you to a part of Iceland you would not be able to visit alone.

With a guide, you will be taken off-roading to a base camp of the cave. You will be provided all the gear needed (but dress warm)! Your guide will share information about the volcano, including the mythical story of how it got its name, as well as information about Iceland. You will be guided on a glacier hike to the cave and given time to explore inside.

2. Reykjavik Food Walk Tour

Although Iceland is not known for its food, I personally found the food to be delicious! This Reykjavik food walk, located in the heart of Reykjavik, takes you to 4-6 local eateries to taste Icelandic food. You will learn information about Iceland, the history of the restaurants you visit and the traditions surrounding food. You will even get to try to famous Fermented Shark!

Food tours are one of my favorite ways to see a new city, and this Reykjavik food walk may be my favorite food tour I’ve ever taken!

3. Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik, Iceland

While I recommend renting a car when visiting Iceland, I know it is not everyone’s preferred way of traveling. If you are without a car but still want to see the sights along the Golden Circle, this Golden Circle Day Tour from Reykjavik is the perfect solution!

This full-day tour will take you with a guide to see the famous Gullfoss Waterfall, Strokkur Geyser, the Silfra Fissure at Thingvellir National Park, as well as more! If you want to get out of the city and see the sights but don’t have a car, this is the tour for you!

4. Snowmobiling on Lanjokull Glacier in Iceland

Snowmobiling on a glacier was never something that was on my bucket list, but after experiencing this, I think it should be on everyone’s! This Snowmobiling Adventure on Langjokull Glacier tour is the best way to experience a place that can not be reached by car due to the feet of snow.

You will be taken by monster ice truck over feet of snow and no roads to a base camp about 45 minutes into the mountains. There, you will be geared up into full snow gear before hopping on your snowmobile for a drive across the glacier. Everywhere you look is pure snow, creating a truly magical feeling. This is perfect for the adventurous traveler.

5. Northern Lights Tour Iceland

Seeing the Northern Lights is something many people hope to experience while in Iceland. If you have your own car, you can go out and look for them yourself, but if you are without car or want a guide, this Northern Lights Small Group Tour is a must.

From Reykjavik, you will be taken to some of the best locations for Northern Lights Spotting. The guides use live data and forecasts to predict which areas will be best that night. You will be provided pastries, hot chocolate and blankets to make this cold experience as comfortable as possible. You will even get some professional aurora photographs!

6. Husky Sledding Tour Iceland

Dogsledding is something that I wish I had time to do while in Iceland. This Small Group Husky Sledding Tour has been highly recommended to me. Led by an expert musher, you are taken on a 35 minute ride on either snow or dry-land.

You will have time to pet the dogs and take photos together, as well as learn about dogsledding and the Iceland.

Iceland is a vast country filled with so many places to see and adventures to have. Whether you are visiting for the first time, don’t want to rent a car or are looking for adventure, there is a tour for you! These six Iceland tours worth booking only scratch the surface of things to do in Iceland. With many areas not accessible without a guide, Iceland is a country, that I highly recommend booking tours for.

Many of the most popular tours book up weeks in advance so I highly recommend reserving your tours early. Some of these tours are only available during certain seasons so keep this in mind when planning your trip!
