Looking for the perfect hotel to stay in while exploring South Iceland? Let me introduce you to Hotel Vik I Mýrdal, a beautiful, modern hotel nestles in the coastal village of Vik, Iceland. With its sleek Scandinavian design, cozy atmosphere and ideal location, it’s the perfect hotel in South Iceland.
Where is Vik?
Vik is located about 2.5 hours southeast of Reykjavik, making it a great place to spend a night if you are exploring the south of Iceland or driving Ring Road. Vik is known for its dramatic black sand beaches and offers stunning views of the coast as well as the cliffs.
The hotel
Hotel Vik I Mýrdal combines Scandinavian simplicity with Iceland’s raw beauty and landscapes. The hotel is designed with neutral tones, natural materials like wood and stone and floor-to-ceiling windows that fill the property with natural light and showcase incredible views.
With 86 rooms, this medium sized hotel is large enough to offer great amenities while still feeling small and relaxed.
The staff at this hotel were incredibly kind and helpful! We arrived midday and earlier than our check in time but they were able to provide us with an early check in and even provided us with great recommendations for lunch spots in town!
We especially loved the cozy lounge areas in the hotel. There’s a common room just off the lobby with oversized windows and comfy couches. We spent time here after dinner, chatting and playing card games!
One special perk during the winter? The hotel offers Northern Lights wake-up calls! This means you can put your name on a list and if the northern lights are visible during the night, they will call to wake you up so you can go see them. We put our name on this list but unfortunately they were not visible this night (but it was still a cool feature!)

Our room
We originally booked a standard room but were upgraded to a superior room upon arrival (The perks of booking through a travel advisor). We were located on the second floor at the front of the building. The room had a European double (could also be 2 twin beds) and floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the black sand beach and town of Vik. The room was clean, quiet, and incredibly comfortable after a day of exploring.
Dining at Berg Restaurant
The hotel’s on-site restaurant, Berg, focuses on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. While we not get the chance to eat lunch or dinner here, we did have enjoy their included buffet breakfast, which was fantastic! There was eggs and sausage, meats and cheeses, yogurt with topping choices, fruit and pastries. I had some eggs as well as bread with salami and smoked salmon (my favorite)!
Why stay in Vik?
Vik is the prefect base for exploring southern Iceland, with popular sights nearby like Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, Dyrholaey Cliffs, Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss Waterfalls, Glacier Hikes and Ice Cave Tours.
Whether you are road-tripping the Ring Road or just exploring South Iceland, Hotel Vik I Mýrdal is the prefect hotel in South Iceland! I’d recommend this hotel to couples, solo travelers and families looking for a well-located hotel in South Iceland. The comfort, design and thoughtful touches (Northern lights wake-up call!) made it a standout!
